The Sitemaps protocol allows your company to tell the search engines about your web pages that you want to have indexed or crawled. With XML Sitemaps you're able to lists all the web pages of your site with additional information as in the last update, the frequency of changes to the page, and the importance relative to the other pages of your site.

The Robots.txt File

The Robots file is an URL exclusion protocol which allows you to tell the search engine spiders which folders and pages to leave out of their index. This helps the search engine spiders to quickly crawl the right content for indexing in the search engine result pages (SERPS).

These tools are by no means replacements to the normal crawler-based spiders that the major search engines use to constantly discover and index new pages across the web.
